October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Doctors are continuing to do research around breast cancer, they have not yet identified a specific root cause for why some women develop it. What they do know is that certain lifestyle-related risk factors, such as what you eat and how much you exercise, can impact your chances of developing breast cancer as well as certain hormones and whether or not you have a family history. To sum it all up up, stay informed about potential breast cancer risks, early detection is key.

  1. In 2020, an estimated 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. as well as 48,530 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
  2. 64% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a localized stage (there is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the breast), for which the 5-year survival rate is 99%.
  3. This year, an estimated 42,170 women will die from breast cancer in the U.S.
